Hattusha aka Hattushash, Hattuşa, Hattuşaş, Boğaköy and Boğakale. The Yerkapı (Earth Gate) is a huge man made embankment on the Southern margin of the city. The embankment is 250m long, 80m wide and 30m high. The external sloping surface is faced with white stone and is visible for miles around. The city wall runs along the top of the embankment with a gate at its centre. There is a tunnel, known as the 'postern gate', through the embankment. This tunnel is 71m (77 yards) in length and is perfectly intact. This picture shows the external entrance to the postern gate, and part of the white-stone faced embankment. The full length of the embankment is not visible due to its curvature. The postern gate was once thought to be a sally port, but it isn't really suitable for this. It is more likely to be of religious and ceremonial importance. | | Turkey Hattusha Hittite capital world heritage site Yerkapi rampart postern gate 2 SEW.jpg (Earth Views)" Hattusha aka Hattushash, Hattuşa, Hattuşaş, Boğaköy and Boğakale. This is a view through the postern gate tunnel looking North (into the city). The tunnel is 71m (77 yards) long and is 3m (9'10") tall. The passage slopes upward as you move North through it, and both ends originally had double wooden doors. | | Turkey Hattusha Hittite capital world heritage site Yerkapi rampart postern gate 3 SEW.jpg (Earth Views)" Hattusha aka Hattushash, Hattuşa, Hattuşaş, Boğaköy and Boğakale. This picture is taken inside the postern gate passage that passes through Yerkapı. The passage is 71m (77 yards) long and 3m (9'10") high (quite roomy for single file, but a bit of a squeeze for two-abreast). It is constructed from corbeled masonry, with each course of stones protruding further inward than the course below, allowing the top to be closed with wedge-shaped stones. | | Turkey Hattusha Hittite capital world heritage site Yerkapi rampart steps to the top 1 SEW.jpg (Earth Views)" Hattusha aka Hattushash, Hattuşa, Hattuşaş, Boğazköy and Boğazkale. | | Turkey Hattusha Hittite capital world heritage site Yerkapi rampart steps to the top 2 SEW.jpg (Earth Views)" " |
