The closer male figure is a personification of the river Ganges, by Claude Poussin; the farther, not so visible, is the one about which the funny story is told -- the personificiation of the Nile, by Giacomo Antonio Fancelli. He hides his head as a piece of iconography: no one knew where the sources (the head) of the Nile were; this was quickly interpreted by wags as Bernini (who designed the fountain) had the figure hide from his sight the façade by his rival Borromini of S. Agnese in Agone off-camera, that he is indeed facing. Unfortunately the fountain was built two years before the church façade....'' |
