To quote from Jim Andrew's page (of sketches):

The name 'HARTSHEAD' means "The Deer's Hill", from the Old English heorot (a hart) and the Old English heafod ('top' or 'hill'). Around 1200 - the area was known as "HERTESHEUED". By 1594 it had become known as "HARTSHADE".

A PIKE could be a long handled spear (as in PIKESTAFF) or a pointed hill (as in PEAK); both explanations of the word are apt.

From the Pike you can survey 4 northern counties of England - Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire.

The Pike is built on the site of a Roman Fire Beacon some 940 feet above sea level.

The original Pike, built in 1751, was struck by lightning in 1799 and collapsed completely in 1820.

It was rebuilt in 1863 by public subscription to commemorate the marriage of the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

During the 2nd World War it was garrisoned by the "Home Guard" as a look-out post.
