Name comes from Norberton(e) ie Old English north buritum' or granary, similarly named to Surbiton on the other side of the Hogsmill River. It has a relatively large amount of social/council housing, especially on the "New Cambridge Estate" and Norbiton Common. Home to the One Norbiton 'Big Society' project established in 2010 supported by the Cabinet Office.
