The 2001 census recorded the resident population as 247,817 in 114,479 households, 44.5% of the households being one-person, though only 6.1% of households being "lone parent with dependent children". Brighton has a fast rail link to London, so many people commute. Entertainment includes the Palace Pier and in the Dome (previously the royal stables); the West Pier closed in 1975.
