About This Category

This collection is of free images/photos/pictures, sounds, videos, etc from science, technology and nature, including birds, animals and plants, and some from the fields of chemistry, physics and biology. Some exhibits that could be in here may be found in collections with a more specific remit, such as "Flowers" and "Leaves and Greenery".

This is intended to serve, in part, as a teachers' and students' resource.

See also New Scientist for the latest news, The Register's science and tech stories, the EurekAlert!/AAAS Multimedia Gallery, and BioImages - Virtual Field-Guide (UK) for scholarly info.

Also, for attempts to catalogue all known species, see: the Encyclopedia of Life, and Barcode of Life.

If you're a journo or other non-scientist and need help with a science fact or story, please consider talking to Sense About Science to help you.

  • zebra = zebras, quagga, Equidae, Equus, horse = Black-and-white (or brown-and-white) striped horselike African mammal.
  • zebra burchells = Equus burchelli, Burchell's Zebra, Plains Zebra = For identification, look to the stripes: according to zoo.org, "A Plains zebra has rather broad stripes, especially towards its rump. The color ranges from black to dark brown on a white to buff background. In some cases, there will be shadowing on the flank and rump between the dark and white striping. Although there is no color variation between the sexes [no sexual dimorphism], plains zebras do vary in color and pattern across their range. Moving from the north to the south of this species' range, there is a tendency for the stripes on the hindquarters to become less well defined." Note that the striping pattern is as individual to a particular zebra as a fingerprint is to a human.
