- fibre optics = fiber optic, fibre optic, optical fibre, light pipe = Fibre optics act as a wave guide for light, preventing it escaping by total internal reflection. The light used may be visible to our eyes, or, commonly, infra-red. The fibres are commonly glass or plastic. Fibres carrying information with light are a good replacement for copper wires carrying infomation by electricity where, for example, bandwidth (speed) or distance, or safety in explosive environments, is important.
