The avenue of goat-headed sphinxes used to lead from the Karnak temple complex to Luxor temple: a distance of 1.2 miles (2km). There were a lot of sphinxes, but many have eroded to oblivion. The little figure between each sphinx's front legs is meant to be Ramesses II.
The construction of the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak was begun by Sethos I (aka Seti I) and was completed by his son Ramesses II. Original paint can be seen adorning the heiroglyphics on the downward facing surfaces.
" There are two designs of column in the Great Hypostyle Hall. The taller columns with a flared out cap represent open lotus flowers; the shorter columns with a narrow cap represent lotus buds.
