Popped over to Spain for lunch yesterday... We drove up through the Vallee d'Aure alongside the Pic du Midi, up over the mountains, into Spain and were going to have lunch at a nice little village on the far side of the village of Bossost. Took a wrong turn in Bossost and ended up going through a mountain tunnel about 8 or 9km long...NIGHTMARE!...at least three of us were/are claustrophobic and were almost screaming inside after about 5 or 6 km! Got out the other side to beautiful views of lakes, reservoirs and sheer cliffs either side. As we (I) had taken the wrong road, we ended up going a lot further through the mountains so we stopped for lunch and I vowed that I, for one, was not going back through the tunnel. Unfortunately, the only other way back was through another tunnel but luckily only about two kilometeres and a couple of minutes...phew!...but...before we got to the exit tunnel, I programmed a route in to the Sat Nav to get us back quickest way......the journey here took another turn, as we couldn't believe that a EU-wide programmed Sat Nav system would have such a narrow, (sometimes only one car wide) stony, rough track full of potholes that stretched for 50km up mountainsides and down again with sheer drops just out of the door...in its memory, as a major exit route from Spain to France! Well some in the car were having a few kittens at times and couldn't even look out... but what a magnificent experience. Anyone wanting some 4x4 experience (not heavily off-road) in Europe should come and try some of these mountain roads...a real buzz. The route sort of started at Lannamezan, on to Montrejeau, Bossost and Vielha over the border, accidentally had lunch in a charming little village called El Pont de Suert, headed further south and then took off westwards to stay on what we thought were the main roads through the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees...thus, small villages were everywhere on that cross country route eg Castejon de Sos, San Martin de Campo, Arro and on to Ainsa, back in France at Aragnouet...
