When evangelising the Guatemala, the Spaniards tried to prevent local people from worshipping their deities and therefore tried to prevent local people from setting up temples for those pagan gods. Rather than fight the invaders, locals decided to keep worshipping their deites in secret and would set up temples in their living rooms, changing the location regularly so that the Christian curates would not find them. Although ancient beliefs are not forbidden anymore, the tradition survives to this day.
