Before the 1910 Union of South Africa this was the Cape Colony, and subsequently the Western Cape was part of what was then Cape Province. Similar in land area to England. The 2001 census recorded ~4,500,000 people in 1,200,000 households.
  • south africa western cape stellenbosch = Second-oldest town in South Africa. Regarded as the wine capital of SA with over one hundred cellars in the area, the vineyards were established by the Dutch governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, who arrived in 1679, and modestly named the town after himself! The town sports Cape Dutch architecture, the world's only Afrikaans university (Maties), and roads lined with old oak trees and bordered with open drainage culverts/ditches. Not much more than a muddy stream (though quite pretty) when we looked.

It has been labelled by researcher Jo Barnes as a serious health hazard and a 'slow motion' environmental disaster. The river's coliform bacteria count is over 34 million a 100ml - way in excess of 2000 a 100ml, which is considered a health risk.
