One of the ``talking statues'' of Rome, so called because people use them to
express themselves (see all the writing behind, which gets periodically
whitewashed to make room for new ``voices''). It is in Via del Babuino, and as
for its story, I quote from the Cadogan guide: ``"...a fountain statue of
Silenus by Giacomo della Porta, so ugly that the Romans named it the Baboon.
Although the statue was long hidden through embarrassment, it has since
resurfaced in all its mouldering, leprous glory, ludicrously topped with a new
head and covered with loony graffitti, in front of the Greek Catholic church of
Sant'Atanasio. By 1581 the whole street was named after this ape, except for
the section near Piazza del Popolo that went by the even more ignoble title of
Borghetto Pidocchioso (Fleabag Alley).'' |
