Ani is an enchanting place on Turkey's border with Armenia. It was an busy and important trading city on the silk route for many years, with about 100,000 inhabitants in the 11th century. I beleive it may have already been in decline before it was destroyed by the Mongol hoards in 1239. Within the city boundries most buildings have long since collapsed leaving just just the churches, cathedral, mosque, caravansarai, citadel and city walls scattered around the most beautiful meadow.
