- vlt = Very Large Telescope = The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is the world's biggest optical telescope. It has four 8-metre telescopes and four 2.4-metre Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs). They sit on a flattened mountain top at Paranal in Chile. They use adaptive optics to eliminate some of the effects of turbulence in the atmosphere, and when they can't use a bright star they create their own by shining a sodium laser upwards to excite sodium ions in the ionosphere---the laser guidestar.
