Moral is: keep as little sensitive data for as short a time as possible accessible to as few people as possible (not on nickable laptops at home for example). Just one reason why a government-held ID national database worries many people with any understanding of practical day-to-day computer security blunders: too much information accessible to too many people, some of whom bear grudges against the government or particular fellow citizens.
