These news items claim that giving a baby a dummy at bedtime reduces the risk of cot death (aka SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) by more than 90% according to a US study, but this was hotly contested in other media outlets. (In the UK in 2004 there were 329 cot deaths, in 2003 there were 344; mainly amongst infants less than 12 months old and the primary cause of death of those over 1 month.)
